***UPDATE: The NYC Council has introduced the relief package.  More details on the bills can be found here.***

As reported by the New York Times, the New York City Council announced that it will introduce a COVID-19 relief package aimed at protecting small businesses, essential workers, tenants and the homeless.

The proposed legislation includes a “bill of rights” for essential workers requiring mandated paid sick leave for gig workers, shift bonuses for non-salaried “essential” employees, and a ban on firing essential workers without “just cause.”  The bill also includes a resolution advising New York’s legislature to place the burden of proof on employers when classifying workers as independent contractors.

The City Council is scheduled to meet at 1:30pm today via Zoom to discuss the relief bill.  We will monitor developments on this proposed legislation and report on any developments.
